Faces of the Ancient World: Fayum Mummy Portraits

February 7, 2026 May 24, 2026

An unprecedented gathering of over 60 Fayum mummy portraits — the hauntingly lifelike encaustic and tempera paintings placed over mummies in Roman-era Egypt — drawn from collections across the United States, Europe, and Egypt. The Brooklyn Museum holds one of the finest groups of these paintings outside Egypt, and this exhibition brings them together with key loans to present a new scholarly reassessment of their making, meaning, and social context. New carbon dating, pigment analysis, and CT scanning of associated mummies provide fresh insight into who these individuals were and how they were commemorated.
